Programme Information

MPhil Stream

Each MPhil student is required to complete 4 compulsory courses and at least 2 elective courses with a total of 12 units as approved by the Division. Students are also required to complete a seminar course every academic year and must register for the relevant thesis research course every term throughout their studies. Each MPhil student is required to submit a thesis based on his/her research for examination and pass a final oral defence of the thesis for graduation.
 

PhD Stream

Pre-candidacy

Each PhD student is required to complete 4 compulsory courses and at least 2 elective courses with a total of 12 units during the pre-candidacy stage. Students are also required to complete a seminar course every academic year and must register for the relevant thesis research course every term throughout their studies. Each PhD student is required to pass the candidacy examination, submit a thesis proposal and pass an oral examination of the thesis proposal within the maximum period of his/her pre-candidacy stage for the advancement to his/her post-candidacy stage.

Post-candidacy

Each student is required to register for a thesis research course every term throughout his/her study period. In addition, each student must take the seminar course every academic year. Each student is required to submit a thesis and pass the oral defence of the thesis for graduation.

Tuition Fee
The tuition fee will be HK$47,000 for 2026/27 and HK$49,500 for 2027/28, regardless of the study mode.
Admission Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should preferably hold a Bachelor's degree with honours (preferably with Second Upper Honours or above) in a field related to biomedical or life sciences.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview to be conducted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

(for PhD programmes only)
  1. To submit an initial application to RGC: By 12 noon, 1 December 2025 (Hong Kong time); and
  2. To submit a full application to CUHK: By 11:59 pm, 1 December 2025 (Hong Kong time).
