Programme Information

MPhil Stream

The normative study period is 2 years for full-time students and 3 years for part-time students. Besides course requirements, an MPhil student is also required to submit a thesis on empirical research work. The student must also attend an oral examination to present his/her work to the thesis committee.
 

PhD Stream

The normative study period is 4 years for full-time students (or 3 years for those with an approved Research Master’s Degree) and 64 months for part-time students (or 48 months for those with an approved Research Master's Degree). All students will be admitted to the pre-candidacy stage. Besides course requirements, they have to pass the candidacy requirements to progress to the post-candidacy stage. The candidacy requirements include passing a written examination and preparing a thesis proposal. In order to obtain the PhD degree, a student (post-candidacy) must submit a doctoral thesis on original research work, and also attend an oral examination to present his/her research to the thesis committee.

Tuition Fee
The tuition fee will be HK$47,000 for 2026/27 and HK$49,500 for 2027/28, regardless of the study mode.
Admission Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants would need to attend an interview (if necessary); and

MPhil Stream

  • submit a written statement of research interest with a brief outline of a research proposal (600 words in English)

PhD Stream

  • submit an outline research proposal with justification for the chosen area of research interest (1,000 words in English)

  1. To submit an initial application to RGC: By 12 noon, 1 December 2025 (Hong Kong time); and
  2. To submit a full application to CUHK: By 11:59 pm, 1 December 2025 (Hong Kong time).
